a thrilling manager meeting

owen's birthday was 10/4, and we went to carraba's. i must now profess my obsession with this place. if only i had $40 to spend on supper every night. ;(

that weekend we went to houston to see lucy, the lovable australopithecus afarensis at the houston museum of natural science. we had only planned on going to the museum for that purpose, and to see the butterfly garden. after walking through the dino hall and gem vault, though, we had to go back sunday. that's just how lame we are.

saturday night was nothing special. after leaving the museum at closing time (17:00), i figured we could just drive aimlessly and look for supper. our hotel was downtown, so it's not like we could lose sight of it, you know? apparently the only places to eat in houston is mcdonald's, though. we couldn't find anything! i drove down 45 N & S, 59, 10 E & W, and 610 N, S, E, & W. finally we found a little cluster of small places, but i couldn't get to it. they don't really believe in frontage roads, either. ;( after a few more minutes, we got to a bbq place and parked on the street because the lot was full. apparently houston isn't as tow happy as austin; an hour later evie was still there on the street.

in our adventures we happened upon the port, which is utterly disgusting. it just made me sick and sad that this is what humans have come to (obviously seeing my 3.2-million-year-old ancestor spurned thoughts of our evolution).

anyhoo, after eating we went to best buy so i could get the third season of "the office." it came with a dundie award and a mini bobblehead of dwight, which now keeps me company at work. after some effort we finally made it back downtown, and just lay in bed all night. the sheets were 400-count, whatever that means. it's all the same to me. but! it had a down feathertop mattress, down pillows, and a down comforter. i actually woke up not in pain and not exhausted. i think that's worth $160.

the hotel we stayed at was really nice, down to the valet parkers. the front desk guy was kissing my ass every time i talked to him, but i guess that is his job.

the only thing i really liked about houston (other than their museums) is the fact the people can actually drive there. it started raining, and i was actually the slowest person on the road. yessss. the rest of houston's pretty lousy, though. i want to go back and stay at this other downtown hotel, the magnolia, that i've heard is nice and go to the fine arts museum. they've got a sculpture garden that looks pretty awesome. ooh! and i've got to ride the monorail. i love how it's just on the street next to the cars.

so, in sum, you should go see lucy, and if you need to get anywhere in the museum district between fannin and kirby, i can tell you how. check out some lovely pictures. there are 1280 versions if you're particularly awestruck by one. ;)
