right now my papaw is undergoing bypass surgery. he had three stints put in this one artery about nine years ago, but their time is up. he's got a good artery in the back of his heart, so hopefully they'll be able to use that one instead of having to cut open his leg, too.

this is my papaw in the hospital. i can't even remember now what this time was for.

this is what he looked like after he had surgery on his neck. papaw used to be a strapping navy man ("navy man all the way, clyde*."), and it kills him he's getting old. he's had more surgeries than i can remember, he walks with a cane but not for very long. i was so proud he took the stairs to my apartment like a pro, but he got really out of breath because of his heart. hopefully this bypass will help.

i want to put this one picture i have of the two of us in here. it'll have to wait til i'm in PTS and not remoting into this stupid ECS server. until then, amuse yourself with this entry about him.

later this morning, my mommy is getting a shot for the severe pain she's been having in her arm. there's something wrong with a nerve in her spine, so they're shooting it directly into her neck. i told her last night, "try not to think about that giant needle they're going to be jabbing directly into your spine."
":nervous laughter: uh, yeah, i'm trying not to!"

she said her doctor said there will be a lot of pressure. pressure always equates pain to me, though. i told her how on "house" when they do spinal taps the patient is in pain. i'd imagine any kind of direct contact with your spine isn't going to feel lovely. they have to start with a numbing shot, anyway. ugh.

when i was talking to nana last night, she said, "don't you worry about papaw, though."
"oh i'm not."
"you just know everything's gonna be all right, huh?"
"yup."
when i was driving to work, though, it occured to me it's starting. and it scared me.

this is too much activity for a time i'm not on my drugs. couldn't all this have waited until next week?

*if you don't understand this reference, you need to read cruddy by lynda barry. it's just about the best book ever, next to wuthering heights (and they couldn't be more different from one another).
